The collection includes business and personal correspondence (1896-1932). Correspondents include McClellan's business associates W.A. Richards and M.L. Harris and personal friend Judge Willis Van Devanter of the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, Cheyenne, Wyoming. The legal documents include partnership agreements between McClellan and Richards (1895, 1900) and a certificate of incorporation from the State of Colorado for the Big Horn Ditch Company (1885). There are a 1909 stockholders report of the Red Bank Cattle Company, bills and receipts (1905-1914) and miscellaneous papers.

Richards (1849-1912) was born in Wisconsin and worked as a surveyor in Nebraska from 1869 to 1873 before surveying the southern and western boundaries of Wyoming territory from 1873 to 1874 with his brother Alonzo. He worked as a surveyor in Santa Clara County, California from 1876 to 1880 before moving to Colorado Springs, Colorado to recover from tuberculosis. George B. McClellan, a Wyoming rancher and politician, was a cattle driver, miner, hunter, and meat contractor prior to settling permanently in Wyoming. In 1895, he entered into partnership with W.A. Richards to operate the Red Bank Ranch in Johnson (later Big Horn) County, Wyoming, an association which continued until Richard's death in 1912.
